Sri Lanka Holiday Packages

An island you can cross in a week — a rock fortress above the jungle, cave temples, the Sacred Tooth in Kandy, tea estates in the clouds, and a coast of mangrove rivers, turtle beaches and a Dutch fort.

One route, three ways to travel it

Six days, from the ancient cities to the sea

Every Sri Lanka package here follows the same six-day, five-night road: Sigiriya and Dambulla in the cultural triangle, Kandy, the tea country around Nuwara Eliya, the beach at Bentota, Galle Fort and Colombo. What changes is how you travel it — three-star hotels with breakfast, four-star hotels with dinners, or five-star hotels with a premium vehicle and a senior guide. All three are private, with your own vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide, and are quoted around your dates.

Things to do

What the itinerary includes

Sigiriya Rock

The fifth-century fortress on a column of granite — water gardens, frescoes and the lion's paws on the way to the summit.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Cave shrines cut into a hillside, their ceilings painted edge to edge, with rows of Buddha figures beneath the rock.

Temple of the Tooth

The Sacred Tooth Relic shrine beside Kandy Lake, the most revered temple on the island.

A Working Tea Factory

The leaf withered, rolled and fired in front of you on the climb into the highlands, with a tasting at the end.

Ramboda Falls

A two-tiered waterfall between tea slopes on the road up to Nuwara Eliya.

Bentota River Safari

A boat through the mangrove channels — water monitors, kingfishers and the occasional crocodile.

Turtles And The Beach

A turtle hatchery on the south-west coast, then the rest of the day on the sand at Bentota.

Galle Fort

A walk around the Dutch ramparts, the lighthouse and the colonial streets before Colombo and its shops.

Planning a trip to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka packs an unusual amount into a small island. The cultural triangle in the centre holds the ancient capitals and rock temples; Kandy, the last royal city, sits in the hills below the tea country; and the south-west coast runs from the river and turtle beaches of Bentota down to the walled town of Galle. Our six-day route links them in a loop that starts at the airport and ends in Colombo, with one night in each place rather than long days of driving.

The three plans differ only in comfort, not in what you see. Smart Saver uses clean three-star hotels with breakfast; Classic Comfort, the most popular, moves up to four-star hotels with dinners and includes the Bentota river safari; Luxury Escape stays in five-star hotels with a premium vehicle, a senior guide, the river safari, a Kandyan dance show and a honeymoon set-up on request. Each is private to your party, with your own air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide for the whole trip, and each can be changed — any day, hotel or pace — when you ask for your quote. A Yala safari, the hill-country train to Ella, a seaplane or extra beach nights can be added.

Every plan is quoted on request rather than sold at a fixed price, on the basis of two adults sharing a room; groups of four or more are quoted at lower rates. Flights, the Sri Lanka visa, entrance fees, camera permits and tips are not included, and hotels are named as a guide and may be replaced by similar ones. Cancellation is free up to 21 days before arrival. Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly, which is applied for online.
