Planning a trip to Thailand
Thailand rewards a little planning. Bangkok alone justifies three or four days: the Grand Palace and Wat Pho sit within walking distance of each other, but the river and its canals are best seen by long-tail boat, and the markets worth visiting are an hour or more outside the city. Our shorter itineraries concentrate on the capital; the longer ones add Ayutthaya, Bang Pa-In and Kanchanaburi as full days out.
The north is a different country in temperament. Chiang Rai sits close enough to the Mekong to feel like a frontier, and the roads west towards Mae Sariang and Mae Hong Son wind through forested ridges, hill-tribe villages and river valleys that see far fewer visitors. If you have ten days, the northern loop takes in Chiang Rai, Thaton, Pai, Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai without ever feeling rushed.
