Dubai Museum & Al Fahidi Fort

Al Fahidi Fort was built in 1787, which makes it the oldest surviving building in Dubai. It has served as a residence, a garrison and a prison, and today it houses the Dubai Museum — the most direct way to understand how quickly this city changed.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The fort itself

Coral-block and gypsum walls, watchtowers and a courtyard holding traditional boats and a barasti palm-frond house — the kind of dwelling most of the population lived in barely a lifetime ago.

Underground galleries

Beneath the courtyard, life-sized dioramas recreate the old souk, the creek, an oasis, desert life at night and the interior of a traditional home. They are dated in style, and that is much of their charm — plenty of visitors find them more memorable than a modern museum's screens.

The pearl diving exhibit

The most affecting section. Pearling was the economy that built Dubai before oil, and the displays cover the tools, the boats and the genuinely brutal working conditions the divers endured.

GOOD TO KNOW

Around an hour is enough, and the underground galleries are cool. It sits in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, so the surrounding lanes are worth time in their own right.
