Sharjah Aquarium & Maritime Museum

The Sharjah Aquarium and the Maritime Museum sit side by side on the Al Khan lagoon, and the pairing is what makes the visit work: one building shows you what lives in the Gulf, the other shows you how the people here made their living from it.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The aquarium

Displays follow the marine habitats of the Gulf — coral reefs, lagoons, mangroves and open sea — with reef fish, rays, moray eels and sharks. Because the focus is local rather than exotic, you finish with a real sense of what is actually swimming off the coast outside.

Touch tank and interactive zones

A supervised touch tank lets children handle safe species, and interactive exhibits are pitched at younger visitors throughout — this is one of the better family stops in the northern emirates.

The Maritime Museum

Next door, the story turns to pearling and dhow building: traditional vessels, diving equipment, the tools of the pearl trade and the navigation methods used before instruments. It is the economy that supported this coast for centuries, told through objects.

GOOD TO KNOW

Around two hours covers both buildings comfortably. Both are indoors and air-conditioned, and Sharjah is roughly half an hour from Dubai outside peak traffic.
