Flyboarding looks impossible and turns out to be surprisingly learnable. You strap into a board connected by hose to a jet ski, which pumps water through nozzles beneath your feet with enough force to lift you clear of the surface — up to around 15 metres if you want to go that high.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Learning to hover

An instructor controls the throttle from the water while you learn, so the power comes on gradually rather than launching you. Balance comes from your legs and hips — the common mistake is over-correcting with the upper body. Most people are hovering steadily within the first few minutes.

Then going higher

Once you can hold a stable hover, the instructor gives you more power and more height. Plenty of first-timers finish the session doing controlled climbs and turns.

The setting

Sessions run off JBR Beach with the Marina towers and Ain Dubai behind you — which makes for a spectacular backdrop when someone on the beach films it.

GOOD TO KNOW

No experience is needed, and all equipment including helmet and life jacket is provided. Expect to fall in repeatedly early on — that is part of learning and completely safe. Reasonable swimming ability and general fitness help. Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.
