Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Visit

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the UAE's most visited building, and for good reason. It holds up to 40,000 worshippers, took over a decade to build, and was designed deliberately to draw from Mughal, Moorish and Ottoman traditions — a piece of architecture meant to represent the wider Islamic world rather than one region of it.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The scale

Eighty-two white marble domes, more than a thousand columns inlaid with mother-of-pearl and semi-precious stone, and reflective pools that mirror the whole structure. The white marble is deliberate — it keeps the courtyard walkable even in summer.

The main prayer hall

Inside is the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, woven by around 1,200 artisans, alongside enormous Swarovski-crystal chandeliers. The floral inlay running through the marble was designed so that no living creature is depicted, in keeping with Islamic tradition.

A guided visit

A guide makes a substantial difference here — the symbolism in the calligraphy, the geometry and the materials is easy to walk straight past otherwise.

DRESS CODE

This is an active place of worship and the dress code is enforced. Women must cover hair, arms and legs; men need long trousers and covered shoulders. Clothing that does not comply will not be admitted, so dress accordingly before you travel. Visiting hours are reduced on Fridays for prayers.
