Rain Room Sharjah

Rain Room is one of the most talked-about artworks of the last two decades, and Sharjah is one of the few places in the world with a permanent installation. The idea is disarmingly simple: a room of continuously falling water, and 3D cameras that sense where you are and switch off the rain immediately above you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Walking through rain

You step into what looks and sounds like heavy rainfall and walk through it without getting wet. A dry pocket travels with you. It is genuinely disorienting for the first few steps — every instinct says you are about to be soaked.

Move slowly

The sensors need a moment to track you. Walk slowly and the effect is perfect; move suddenly and you will catch a few drops. Most people work this out within the first minute.

The photography

Backlighting turns the falling water into bright streaks against a dark room, and the silhouettes it produces are the reason the work spread so widely online. Sessions run around 15 minutes, which is enough time to experience it properly and still get your shots.

GOOD TO KNOW

Entry is by timed session and numbers are limited, so booking ahead is sensible. Dark clothing photographs best against the lit rain. Sharjah Art Foundation sits in the restored Al Mureijah Square arts district, worth exploring while you are there.
