The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is one of the most substantial museums in the Emirates, and among the least crowded. It occupies a beautifully restored souk building on the Corniche, its central hall crowned by a golden dome decorated with the zodiac in gold leaf.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Faith and practice
The Abu Bakr Gallery of Islamic Faith opens the collection with manuscripts, models of the holy sites and objects connected to the Hajj — context that makes the rest of the museum read more clearly.
Islamic science and technology
The Ibn Al-Haytham Gallery is the standout for many visitors: astrolabes, celestial globes, early surgical instruments, navigation tools and mathematical devices from a period when the Islamic world led the sciences.
Art across the centuries
Upper galleries move chronologically through ceramics, glass, metalwork, textiles, coins, armour and manuscripts spanning more than a thousand years, with exceptional calligraphy throughout.
GOOD TO KNOW
Two hours is comfortable. The museum is air-conditioned and quiet, and an audio guide is included — worth taking, as the labelling rewards it. Sharjah is roughly half an hour from Dubai outside peak traffic.
