The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is the newest addition to Saadiyat Island's Cultural District, and it takes on an unusually ambitious subject: the entire story of the natural world, from the origins of the universe to the evolution of life on Earth and the forces still shaping our planet today.

WHAT TO EXPECT

From the Big Bang to Earth

The opening galleries deal with deep time — the formation of the universe, the birth of the solar system and the violent early history of our own planet. Meteorites and rare specimens ground the astronomy in objects you can stand in front of, which is what makes the scale comprehensible.

Life on Earth

The museum moves through the emergence and evolution of life, with fossils and specimens that trace how living things adapted, thrived and disappeared across successive eras. The palaeontology displays are the ones most visitors talk about afterwards.

Science you can see working

Interactive, state-of-the-art galleries are built around the natural sciences rather than a single collection, so the museum works as well for curious adults as it does for children. Displays are designed to be explored rather than simply read.

GOOD TO KNOW

Around two hours is comfortable for the permanent galleries. The museum is indoors and fully air-conditioned, which makes it a reliable option in summer or when the afternoon heat rules out outdoor plans.

Saadiyat's Cultural District is designed to be visited as a cluster, and the museum sits within easy reach of its neighbours.
